This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
